London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan announced Friday a plan to turn London into Europe’s largest car-free zone. This plan, covering certain miles of road in Central London, will ban the use of vehicles to encourage walking, cycling, and to help the public transportation system deal with social distancing restrictions.

The announcement came soon after public transport operators had received $2 billion (1.6 billion pounds) in government funding. The funds will help cover revenue dips through October of this year.

Rider numbers on London’s Underground network fell 95% since March when Brittain went into lockdown. Additionally, the number of bus trips fell by 85% in the same time.
