House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) went before the press for his first formal conference to further explain his goals. On Israel, Johnson made clear that he would not abandon the nation during its war against Hamas terrorists.

Johnson also touched on other topics, like the funding debacle that has hung over the chamber since Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was speaker. Johnson said representatives have already advanced eight of the required bills needed to avert a shutdown and reiterated that these measures were “fiscally responsible.”

Johnson summarized that his ultimate goal as speaker was to push the U.S. towards what he deemed the “core principles of American conservatism.”
