National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan says there is a real “risk” that the Israel-Hamas war will escalate into a broader conflict.

Sullivan made those comments to ABC “This Week.” They come in light of two recent U.S. strikes on Iranian military targets in Syria in retaliation to nearly a dozen attacks on American bases in recent weeks.

Iran is a major backer of Hamas as well as Hezbollah in Lebanon, the latter of which has been attacking Israel’s northern border for the last several weeks. The U.S. currently has two aircraft carriers stationed in the region as a means of deterring a broader war.

U.S. support of Israel is drawing a sharp rebuke from Iran, which is threatening possible retaliation if the war continues.
