Beyond the borders of Israel and Gaza, tensions continue to boil and often erupt in violence over the presence of Jewish people in Muslim areas. One such case occurred in Russia’s mostly Muslim region of Dagestan, which saw a burst of unrest over the weekend.

Locals in the area reportedly stormed a hotel and airport in search of Jewish guests after a flight from Tel Aviv arrived in the city of Makhachkala. The mob was filled with mostly young men waving Palestinian flags as they aggressively pressed forward shouting “Allahu Akbar.”

Police say they arrested 60 people in connection with the unrest and identified 150 of those who were most active in the riot. Local health authorities say 20 people had been injured, including nine police officers. The passengers on the plane remained safe, according to reports from Reuters. The airport was able to resume normal operations on Monday.

Since the riot, the White House said it “vigorously condemns” the mob for its “antisemitic protests.” Moscow tried to pin the blame on Ukraine, saying it staged a “provocation,” and accused other “outside influence” for inciting the unrest.
