Israeli forces are attacking Gaza’s main northern city three days after launching a major ground invasion.
On Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced what he called the “second stage of the war,” saying the objectives are “to destroy the military and governmental capabilities of Hamas and bring the hostages home.”
So far, Israel’s military has hit more than 600 targets and killed dozens of Hamas militants, including four top officials.
Israel is doing its best to prevent civilian casualties. Upon launching the invasion, the IDF renewed calls for civilians to evacuate the city.
Unfortunately, many have chosen to stay, greatly increasing the risk of civilian casualties. Hamas claims over 8,000 people were in the Israeli offensives. The Biden administration has cast doubt on those figures, but some UN-related groups say the numbers are more or less accurate.
