As late as 1 a.m. Eastern on Thursday, law enforcement officials continued their frantic search for the suspect in a horrific mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine. 

Both CNN and Fox News have reported that a male subject killed at least 22 people and injured more than 30 others as local law enforcement issued a shelter-in-place order and called for vigilance from residents in Lewiston and surrounding communities. As of this writing, which occurred overnight on Thursday, the shelter-in-place order remained in effect, according to a post on X, formerly Twitter, from the Maine State Police. 

“There is an active shooter situation in the city of Lewiston,” Maine State Police posted on Facebook and X, formerly Twitter, at about 8 p.m. Wednesday. “Law enforcement is asking people to shelter in place. Please stay inside your home with the doors locked. Law enforcement is currently investigating at two locations right now.”

A few hours later, after the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office shared images of the shooter, the Lewiston Police Department posted on Facebook that it was seeking Robert Card, a 40-year-old from Bowdoin, Maine. 

It was later revealed that the shootings occurred at Schemengees Bar and Sparetime Recreation, the latter being a bowling alley. 

Further reports revealed that Card is a member of the U.S. Army Reserve and stationed in Saco, Maine. Fox News, citing a bulletin from the Maine Information and Analysis Center, reports that Card is believed to have recently reported having suffered mental health issues, including hearing voices, and had also spoken of opening fire at the National Guard Base in Saco. 

State and federal officials have confirmed that they are aware of the incident, and the FBI’s Boston Field Office, which is tasked with federal policing in Maine, said it stands ready to assist in the investigation as needed. 

“The FBI Boston Division continues to coordinate with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners in Maine, and we stand ready to assist with any available resources they need, including evidence response, investigative and tactical support, as well as victim assistance,” the office posted on X. “We continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and report any and all suspicious activity and/or individuals to law enforcement immediately. As this situation is still very fluid, we have no further comment at this time and will refer you to the Maine State Police.”

In a post on X, Maine Gov. Janet Mills urged “all people in the area to follow the direction of State and local enforcement” and promised “to continue to monitor the situation and remain in close contact with public safety officials.”

President Joe Biden has also been made aware of the shooting, according to a statement from the White House.
