The U.S. is turning up the heat on Beijing as the Biden administration has announced new restrictions on AI chips to China.
The latest restrictions are part of an ongoing effort to crack down on China’s efforts to avoid existing export controls. Under the new measures, the U.S. is halting shipments to China of advanced AI chips. It’s also restricting a swath of chips and chip-making tools for other hostile countries such as Iran and Russia, along with certain blacklisted Chinese companies.
Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo released a statement saying “The controls… confront the threats to our national security posed by” China.
China’s foreign ministry slammed the new restrictions, accusing the U.S. of “politicizing and weaponizing trade and tech issues” and “destabilizing global industrial and supply chains.”
