In 81 A.D., the throne of Rome was vacant following the untimely death of the conqueror of Jerusalem and Roman Emperor Titus. Historians have wondered if Titus’ death, which was attributed to “natural causes” due to a fever, was actually orchestrated by his estranged and much younger brother and the man who would take his place on the imperial throne. Regardless of the means by which he got there, this man would serve as the next emperor. He was a controversial character who was beloved by his military and despised by the Senate: the Emperor Domitian.
