Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is leaving the door open to reprising his role as House Speaker, telling conservative radio host Hugh Hewit he’ll do “whatever the conference wants.”

It’s a reversal for McCarthy who, as reported by FISM, previously said he would not seek the speakership again. But the Middle East conflict has only heightened the urgency to find a new speaker, meaning all options are on the table.

The former speaker is staunchly pro-Israel and has already laid out a five-point US response plan to the war.

Republicans held a candidate forum Tuesday and will take a vote Wednesday morning. Out of the two candidates actively seeking the speakership, Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) holds a slight edge over Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) in public endorsements. Jordan says aiding Israel will be a top priority should he take up the gavel.
