An Iranian woman is the latest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize thanks to her part in the fight for women’s and human rights in the Islamic nation of her birth.

Narges Mohammadi, 51, received the award while still sitting behind bars. Iranian authorities have arrested her 13 times, convicted her five times, and sentenced her to a total of 31 years in prison, where she has received 154 lashes.

The committee is calling for her release, but Iran has not yet responded to the request.

After receiving news of the award, the New York Times quoted Mohammadi as saying she would never stop striving for democracy and equality, even if that meant staying in prison.
