As House Republicans sort out who will be the next speaker, Donald Trump is throwing his hat in the ring as a temporary solution.
The former president told Fox News he’d serve as a “unifier” while Republicans decided the next speaker, saying he would only do it for up to 90 days. He’s already received the backing of at least one Republican, Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green.
Trump plans to visit Washington, D.C., next Tuesday to discuss plans moving forward. But it remains unlikely Trump will actually take up the gavel, as just this morning he endorsed House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) for the role.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump said Jordan would be “a GREAT Speaker of the House & has my Complete and Total Endorsement!”
Jordan is one of two lawmakers running for speaker, the other being Majority Leader Steve Scalise. Trump’s influence might be necessary in next week’s vote. Back in January, it took the Republican conference 15 rounds of voting before Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was given the position.
Jordan says the GOP needs to make sure that doesn’t happen again.
