The parents of the Oxford school shooter will go to trial after a historic ruling.

James and Jennifer Crumbley are facing involuntary manslaughter charges for the four students their son Ethan murdered in 2021. They’re the first American parents to be charged in connection to a mass school shooting. Prosecutors argue the Crumbleys ignored their son’s mental illness and then bought him a gun instead of getting him help.

The parents have been fighting to get the unprecedented charges dismissed for two years, but a Friday ruling by the Michigan Supreme Court denied their final attempt.

The trial date is still to be determined and the parents could avoid it altogether by cutting a plea deal.

Meanwhile, an Oakland County judge determined last week that Ethan is eligible for a sentence of life without parole. He’ll be sentenced in December.
