With Kevin McCarthy out as Speaker of the House, the big question is what happens now?

North Carolina Rep. Patrick McHenry is currently serving as interim speaker until the House chooses a replacement next week. Following the vote, McHenry declared a recess so lawmakers could “discuss the path forward.”

Just who will serve as the next speaker remains an open question.

Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz has previously suggested Majority Leader Steve Scalise as a viable replacement. Reports suggest Scalise is currently gauging support.

House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan is entertaining a bid for the gavel. He released a statement Wednesday asking the Freedom Caucus to back him as speaker. However, Jordan has previously said the ultimate decision is up to the party.

Other names being considered are Oklahoma Rep. Kevin Hern,  who chairs a caucus called the Republican Study Committee, as well as Majority Whip Tom Emmer (Minn.) and even former President Donald Trump.

Hern has confirmed his interest in serving.

“I think everyone knows I’m very conservative,” Hern said. “In fact, I’m probably one of the most conservative members in Congress. It’s been reported time and time again. I think that’s important for the Republican Party to know that. As some people have said, I’m conservative and I’m not mad about it. That’s good. I think that’s a good way to go in the Republican Party. I think we need to be pointing our guns outward, not at each other.”
