Before that shutdown was narrowly avoided, the House saw chaos as it was running out of time before a floor vote. One Democrat got desperate to beat the clock.
Rep. Jamaal Bowman of New York is now under investigation after he pulled a fire alarm, prompting an evacuation of the entire congressional building. Many Republicans are asserting that he pulled the alarm to delay the vote and buy time to read the bill.
Bowman disputes that claim, instead asserting that he thought the “alarm would open a door.” His colleagues across the aisle are now calling for him to resign, which seems unlikely.
Former President Donald Trump compared Bowman’s actions and consequences to those of the January 6th rioters.
Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said he plans to have a discussion with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries about the incident, saying it “should not go without punishment.”
