It seems as though the fight over the presence of sexualized literature in schools is crossing borders.

On Wednesday, thousands of people gathered across Canada to protest and accused schools of needlessly exposing children to over-sexualized content. The protests were organized under an initiative known as “1 Million March 4 Children.”

According to its website, the group has the express goal of “advocating for the elimination of the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) curriculum, pronouns, gender ideology and mixed bathrooms in schools.”

The group further clarifies that its members are not against individuals who associate with the LGBT community but are against the teaching of such gender ideology in schools.

Some protesters in the city of Regina spoke about their reasons for joining the protests.

But as these parents marched, they were met with resistance. Counter-protesters showed up to some of the demonstrations claiming this movement was doing nothing more than importing a United States-based culture war into Canada.

The counter-demonstrators also posit that it is beneficial for kids to learn about gender ideology in order to create a more welcoming environment for LGBT peers.

A handful of arrests were made in cities like Ottawa and Victoria as police say the protests grew out of control.

Otherwise, politicians and school board officials are doubling down on their gender policies. Before the protests even began, school boards from four districts issued statements of support for the LGBT community. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau chimed in by denouncing the protests.

On X, the Prime Minister wrote,

Transphobia, homophobia, and biphobia have no place in this country. We strongly condemn this hate and its manifestations, and we stand united in support of 2SLGBTQI+ Canadians across the country – you are valid and you are valued.

The Canadian Liberal Party released a similar statement on X. Despite the pushback, 1 Million March 4 Children noted that it will not give up on the cause.

In two posts on X, the group thanked “everyone who stood with us in unity” and said its members’ “voices resonated not only across our nation but also around the world.” The group added that “we are not here for a fleeting moment; our commitment is to amplify our voices even further as we move forward.”
