The Department of Homeland Security does not seem to know the locations of a large number of migrants released into the country.
The DHS Inspector General recently completed an audit of destination addresses provided by apprehended migrants and found that out of over 980,000 addresses, 18% were unusable for tracking post-release.
The report studied a period from March 2021 to August 2022. DHS released more than 1 million migrants into the U.S. during that time. The federal watchdog warns that neither border patrol nor ICE are able to obtain and validate addresses.
DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said Monday the administration has an effective model to curb immigration. He’s most likely referencing the CBP One app, which allows migrants to schedule an appointment at a port of entry.
Yet the Biden administration is facing a new spike in immigration patterns. More than 20,000 Mexican family members entered the country in July, and nearly half of them crossed illegally. For context, only 6,000 Mexican family members crossed during the whole 2019 fiscal year.
