In a rare moment of Congressional unity, a bipartisan panel is now recommending the US ban all technology exports to Huawei and China’s top semiconductor firm.

This follows on the heels of a discovery that new chips in Huawei phones may violate trade restrictions. Last week, the Chinese tech giant started selling a phone called the Mate 60 Pro, which contains a chip that analysts believe was made using US technology, most likely provided by Semiconductor International Manufacturing Corp, or SMIC.

Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wisc.) said this was reason enough to cut off both tech giants completely. He said the US needs “to make clear that any firm that flouts US law and undermines our national security will be cut off from our technology.”

Huawei US Chief Cybersecurity Officer Andy Purdy told Yahoo! Finance that the company hopes to cooperate with the US to move toward “globalization.”

Huawei and SMIC were placed on a trade blacklist in 2019 and 2020, respectively, over national security concerns.
