Meta announced Tuesday that it had removed a massive Chinese misinformation network.

In an operation the company termed Spamouflage, researchers took down more than 7,700 accounts and 930 pages on Facebook. The social media parent company called it the “largest known cross-platform covert influence operation in the world.”

These accounts generated positive posts about China and negative commentary about the US. They also promoted misinformation about the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, some accounts ran a headline that the virus originated at Fort Detrick in Maryland.

Meta says the influence campaign began in 2019 and is present on every major social media platform.
