Hurricane Idalia slammed into Florida’s Big Bend as a Category 3 storm Wednesday morning, bringing with it intense winds and catastrophic storm surges. At least two people were reported to have died.

According to the National Hurricane Center winds reached up to 130 miles per hour, while storm surges reached several feet – flooding roadways. It marks the first recorded time since hurricane data was recorded that a major storm tracked into the Big Bend region between Tallahassee and Tampa.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is urging residents to take the storm seriously.

Idalia’s since been downgraded to a Category 1 storm, with winds of 90 miles per hour. Forty-nine counties are under a state emergency and, as of midday Wednesday, some 275,000 residents were without power. DeSantis says the state is working to bring power back online as soon as possible.
