A suspect is in custody after a deadly shooting at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill Monday afternoon, according to an announcement from the school’s chancellor, Kevin Guskiewicz.

Shots were first reported at 1 p.m., the suspect was taken into custody shortly after 2:30 p.m., and the university issued an “all clear” shortly after around 4 p.m.

Tuesday, it was revealed that Zijie Yan, an associate professor in the department of Applied Physical Sciences, was  the victim of the shooting.

Tailei Qi, a graduate student in Yan’s department and apparently one of Yan’s advisee’s, has been charged with first-degree murder and having a gun on education property.

Qi, formerly a student at Louisiana State University and Wuhan University, is a native of China. He appeared in court Tuesday, but did not enter a plea. He is being held without bond.

The motive for the shooting is unclear.
