President Joe Biden pledged to help Maui rebuild from deadly wildfires for “as long as it takes” after touring the devastated city of Lahaina Monday.
Wildfires in Hawaii have killed at least 114 people, the largest natural disaster death toll in modern U.S. history, and over 800 others are still missing.
President Biden declared a major disaster on Aug. 10 with the White House saying he’s been leading a “whole of government” recovery effort. Hawaii Gov. Josh Green praised Biden for his help, but not everyone shared the governor’s gratitude.
Protestors greeted Biden with middle fingers and signs reading “Go home, Joe” and “No comment,” referencing Biden’s refusal to comment on the death toll last week.
