Tuesday marked the two-year anniversary of the Taliban retaking control of Afghanistan, a return to power characterized by the oppression of women and a crackdown on civil rights.

U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed released a statement saying, “It’s been two years since the Taliban took over in Afghanistan. Two years that upturned the lives of Afghan women and girls, their rights and futures.”

The Taliban resumed its rule amidst America’s disastrous pullout from Afghanistan. President Joe Biden had vowed to remove all U.S. troops from Afghanistan and officially end America’s longest War.

Biden fulfilled his promise, but the poorly planned exit left behind billions of dollars’ worth of U.S. military equipment and put the lives of Afghan interpreters at risk. Ultimately, Biden’s exit cost the lives of 13 American service members killed in a bombing attack at the Kabul airport.

At the time Biden called the pullout an “extraordinary success.”
