In Maui, the death toll is at least 99 following a harrowing spate of wildfires.

As of Tuesday morning, 25% of the burn zone in Lahaina has been searched, but over a thousand people are still missing. Gov. Josh Green says the search could take more than a week.

Back on the mainland, frustration is growing with President Joe Biden’s response to the tragedy. News of him relaxing at a Delaware beach over the weekend sparked outrage. The optics were made worse following an exchange with reporters where Biden said he had “no comment” on the tragedy.

Former Hawaii Democratic State Rep. Mark Kaniela Ing called Biden’s remark “shocking.” Despite the poor optics, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre is defending the president’s actions.

The White House issued a fact sheet Tuesday that details the Biden administration’s response to the fires, including the deployment of FEMA and the military.
