It appears as though some Republicans are refusing to approve funding for DHS if it doesn’t include some serious tweaks to border policy.
Fifteen Republican representatives, all from Texas and led by Congressman Chip Roy, wrote an open letter to fellow GOP members. In it, the Texans say there will refuse to vote on any government funding without “necessary steps to secure the border.”
The letter suggests President Joe Biden be required to sign a Republican border security bill which passed the House earlier this year. The bill would restart the border wall construction, hire more border patrol agents, and notably limit asylum claims.
The Texans also suggest removing DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas from his position and reimbursing Texas for Operation Lone Star.
These 15 representatives could hinder the work of passing a bill or continuing resolution to keep the government funded, and thereby avoid a shutdown. Congress has until Sept. 30 to act in order to avoid such a shutdown.
