Haitians are celebrating the release of kidnapped American nurse Alix Dorsainvil and her daughter.

Their release comes nearly two weeks after they were taken at gunpoint in the capital city, Port-au-Prince. The Christian school Alex works for, El Roi Haiti, confirmed the pair’s safety Wednesday, saying they are “”healthy and unharmed.”

The U.S. State Department thanked Haitian and U.S. interagency partners for working to secure their freedom. It’s still unclear who was behind the kidnapping or how the mother and child were freed.

While the Dorsainvil story ends on a positive note, the situation in Haiti remains dire. The country remains under a U.S. “do not travel” advisory.

Gangs have dominated the streets since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. Since January, the Haiti has seen over 500 documented kidnappings.
