Migrants clashed with Border Protection officials at a southern border crossing late Tuesday.

The incident occurred thanks to a rumor that the U.S. would “open the border,” which drew hundreds of mostly-Venezuelan nationals to the banks of the Rio Grande in Juarez, Texas. Border Patrol lobbed pepper balls to disperse the crowd trying to breach barriers.

This comes as Massachusetts declared a state of emergency citing the “rapidly rising numbers” of migrants in the state. Democratic Gov. Maura Healey made the announcement and says over 5,600 families, many members of which are migrants, are currently living in state shelters.

That marks an 80% increase from 3,100 families just one year ago.
