Previously undisclosed meetings with a Chinese energy official is raising concerns about the Biden administration’s decision to tap oil reserves back in 2021.
Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm had two closed-door meetings with her Chinese counterpart, Zhang Jianhua, that year. These were on Nov. 19 and 21 of 2021.
On Nov. 23 of the same year, the White House announced the first release from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
The Department of Energy has since said those meetings were about climate change. But the timing makes it look like the Biden administration secretly discussed their plans with China.
Unipec, which fits under the larger China state-owned company Sinopec, bought at least 2 million barrels of oil from those releases.
Zhang happened to serve in Sinopec’s leadership for years, but Hunter Biden also has strong ties to the company. His investment firm amassed a 30-percent stake in this company back in 2015. At the time of the reserve sales, he still had strong financial ties there.
Meanwhile, the younger Biden’s recently released plea deal admits he received millions of dollars in payments from China-based energy companies.
