Some are calling new European travel rules “Orwellian.”

A passport will no longer be enough for travelers going into the European Union beginning in 2024. Instead, travelers will need special authorization that asks for detailed personal information.

This goes beyond just providing a name and birthdate. Instead, travelers must answer questions on education, occupation, and even provide their parents’ names. The European Travel Information and Authorization System says it strengthens national security.

But Nile Gardiner, a former aide to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, says it’s government overreach.

Gardiner believes the system will be abused, most likely to discriminate against certain U.S. political views. The applications could take up to 30 days to process. Once approved, travel permission would be valid for up to three years.
