Critics are now slamming the Biden Administration for a new rule that bans the sale of many common varieties of lightbulbs.

The Department of Energy rule, which took effect Tuesday, prohibits the sale of what the department considers less energy efficient light bulbs. The Biden administration has claimed the rule will lower the cost of consumer energy bills, but critics have called the move government overreach.

The rule notably prohibits the sale of the popular and less expensive incandescent light bulbs. The department has clarified that although businesses are not allowed to sell light bulbs that fall under the new regulation, it is still legal to own them.

The Department claims the rule was created in part to promote the use of more expensive and longer lasting LED light bulbs.

Businesses that violate the rule could potentially be fined more than $500 per banned bulb. Industry compliance with the new rule has been estimated to cost over $100 million.
