Democrats condemned a Republican-led plea to protect children from irreversible transgender treatments.

A congressional hearing on the harms of gender-affirming care opened with a podcast clip from a “queer surgeon” who admits gender medicine is experimental. Republican Rep. Mike Johnson (La.) then called for a nationwide ban on gender transition surgeries for minors.

Democrat Rep. Jerry Nadler (N.Y.)  condemned the hearing as bullying kids. And Democrat Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (Pa.) argued that such treatments “changed children’s lives for the better.”

But detransitioner and Republican witness Chloe Cole countered those statements with her own testimony.

She began hormonal treatment as a young teenager and underwent a double mastectomy at age 15. Cole now says the adults who affirmed her beliefs caused her irreversible harm.
