Protests broke out across Israel Monday after the government passed a controversial judicial reform bill.
The new law allows for Israel’s parliament to override some decisions made by its supreme court.
Israeli police have attempted to disperse protesters using cavalry as well as water cannons. Israel’s largest trade union and members of the Israeli Defense Force have threatened to strike if the law is not revoked. President Joe Biden has condemned the law as “divisive.”
The European Union also issued a statement expressing concern over the law, noting that it may weaken judicial oversight. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the reforms as necessary, and called for negotiations with the opposition to move the government forward.
