The ethics of surrogacy are in the spotlight after a baby boy died when the two men who hired the surrogate ordered that the child be denied critical medical care.
The gay couple hired Brittney Pearson to carry a child for them. But early on in the pregnancy, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. In order for her to receive the chemo treatment she needed, the best option was to deliver the baby at 25 weeks, when he would have the best chance of survival. But the couple purchasing the child from Pearson didn’t want to deal with potential health problems.
Despite Pearson offering to adopt the baby, and even threee other families lining up to take him in, the couple threatened legal action against anyone who would help the baby live. The baby boy was delivered at 25 weeks, but was neglected critical medical care, and therefore tragically passed away.
