Millions of U.S. military emails were rerouted to Russian ally Mali as a result of a typo. The emails included sensitive information like military leaders’ itineraries and maps and photos of installations.

A Dutch technician who manages Mali’s email domain alerted the Pentagon to the mistake. He told the Financial Times that he warned the U.S. military about the potential national security risk back in 2013.

The email domain used by Defense Department employees is -.mil. However, the correspondence was sent to a .ml address, which corresponds with accounts owned by the government of the West African country.

But Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh reassured that these emails were sent from employees’ personal accounts, not DOD email addresses. Singh stressed that none of the emails contained classified information
