U.S. involvement in the war in Ukraine just became much more real, as President Joe Biden issued an order Thursday allowing the Pentagon to call up 3,000 military reservists for deployment to Europe.

The order calling for the reservists said it was “necessary to augment” U.S. forces in order to further deter Russian aggression. Newsweek reports that U.S. troops will not be deployed directly to Ukraine, as the country is not a member of NATO.

But Lt. Gen. Douglas Sims says the move “reaffirms the unwavering support and commitment to the defense of NATO’s eastern flank” in light of the war.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Gen. Oleksandr Tarnavskyi on Thursday announced the arrival of the Pentagon’s highly controversial cluster munitions.

Russia has denounced the shipment and says they will retaliate with similar weaponry if Kyiv first deploys them.
