Government censorship is reaching shocking new levels, at least according to the House Weaponization Subcommittee.
According to a new interim report published Monday, the Department of Homeland Security used the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to censor and spy on Americans’ social media posts ahead of both the 2020 and 2022 elections.
CISA was originally created under the Trump administration to defend against cybersecurity threats. But according to the report, the agency quickly expanded its mission to include monitoring “disinformation” from foreign entities and eventually American citizens.
The report says CISA “exploited its connections with Big Tech and government-funded non-profits to censor” Americans – even directly funneling misinformation reports through specific portals.
But following backlash to DHS’s Disinformation Governance Board in 2022, CISA chose to outsource the work to a nonprofit and scrub its website of any reference to “disinformation.”
The subcommittee says it plans to investigate the matter further.
