For the first time, the Department of Justice has announced charges against Chinese companies for fentanyl production and distribution.

Attorney General Merrick Garland made the announcement on Friday and says this will target the beginning stage of the supply chain in the U.S.

The companies are accused of shipping precursor chemicals needed to create fentanyl. Garland says they go so far as to disguise the chemicals at a molecular level.

One of the four companies allegedly sent enough chemicals to produce 50 kilograms of fentanyl. That’s enough to kill 25 million Americans.

Two employees of these Chinese companies were arrested in Honolulu, Hawaii, and will appear in federal court soon.  Six other employees who have been charged remain at large.
