Basketball fans in San Antonio celebrated Thursday night as the Spurs drafted heralded big man Victor Wembanyama with the first pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
Wembanayama is seen as the best NBA recruit since Lebron James 20 years ago, and it’s been common knowledge the Spurs would draft him ever since the once-dominant franchise won the NBA lottery.
The Spurs, who have struggled in recent years, hope that the new recruit will revive the team to the heights it experienced during the storied career of legendary power forward Tim Duncan.
Fans have noted that the last two No. 1 picks made by the Spurs, center David Robinson in 1987 and Duncan 1997, brought home victory to San Antonio.
Wembanyama is the first No. 1 pick to come from France in league history. He is also the first European player who did not play in the NCAA to be selected first in the draft since Andrea Bargnani of Italy in 2006, who was drafted by the Toronto Raptors.
