The effects of the COVID-19 lockdowns are still being felt by American students.
According to the latest Nation’s Report Card testing, middle schoolers’ reading and math scores have sunk below last year’s unprecedented low.
Scores have already been declining for years, but last year saw a massive drop-off. Between the 2019-20 school year and now, the average math score for 13-year-olds dropped by 9 points and reading scores dropped by 4.
Meanwhile, test results have dropped to their lowest levels recorded since they began being tracked in 1994.
The associate commissioner for assessment at the National Center for Education Statistics said during the pandemic that “Students’ basic skills were disrupted in a way that we would not have thought before.”
