There are growing concerns of a government shutdown after House Republicans threw a hailmary even after the debt deal was reached.
Members of the GOP Freedom Caucus stood firm on their calls for fiscal responsibility, by submitting 2024 bills at 2022 spending levels.
McCarthy even supported the cuts, saying that the spending limits he agreed to in his debt limit deal represent a number that cannot be surpassed, not a target figure.
And while some are accusing the GOP members of holding the debt deal hostage, Louisiana Republican Rep. Garrett Graves explains their motives.
“I want to be clear, Republicans are going to demand continuing to build upon the success that we were able to achieve in debt ceiling negotiations, in changing the way that Washington spends,” The Washington Examiner quoted Graves as saying.
Meanwhile. Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.) is hopeful of avoiding a government shutdown.
If the GOP-led budget bills pass unchanged, it would result in a $120 billion trim to the limits agreed upon between Biden and McCarthy.
