Tuesday, former President Trump pleaded not guilty to federal charges that he illegally kept classified documents.
Trump spoke to a crowd of supporters in New Jersey after the historic arraignment, saying it was a bad day for the country and accused the Biden administration of interfering with the 2024 election.
Republicans reacted to the charges in a number of ways. In D.C., Ohio Sen. JD Vance said he would block future Biden Justice Department nominees. He says Trump’s indictment is just the latest example of the department targeting its political opponents.
Meanwhile, GOP presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy sent a letter to every other campaign asking them to commit to pardoning Trump if elected.
Trump has seen a boost in Republican support following the charges, but many political analysts argue the indictment will ultimately hurt him with independents in the general election. That view was expressed by former House Speaker Paul Ryan on Tuesday.
