Charges were dropped against a street preacher who was arrested on June 6 during an LGBTQ Pride event in Reading, Pennsylvania.

Damon Atkins was initially charged with “disorderly conduct, engaged in fighting,” but Berks County Commissioner Christian Leinbach said he believed the arrest was “unlawful” and “could open the City of Reading and their police department to legal action.”

Atkins responded to the events by saying, “I love my neighbor as Lord Jesus has taught me to love myself. That’s why I was there.”

Video of Atkins’ arrest shows the street preacher holding a sign that read “Jesus said go and sin no more” and being approached by a police officer who told Atkins to let the pride crowd “have their day” and to “be respectful.”

Atkins responded that he was standing on public property.

“Know who’s cheering for us? The people who are in Hell,” Atkins is heard saying. “So, you do you, and I’m going to do me.”

After the officer walked away, Atkins began quoting scripture, after which he was handcuffed.
