The United Kingdom is slamming the breaks on puberty blockers. The National Health Service announced on Friday that it will “only commission puberty- suppressing hormones as part of clinical research.”

The NHS released an interim report saying there were gaps in the evidence surrounding the use of the drugs for transgender patients. The report noted that kids suffering from gender dysphoria often have comorbidities like mental health problems or autism. The announcement is a radical departure from the policies in the United States. Last year, the White House said so-called “gender affirming care” for minors is settled science and denied it could be illegal.

A number of states, including Missouri, Louisiana, and Florida, have taken steps to ban transgender treatments for kids.
