In a surprise decision from a conservative majority panel, the Supreme Court has ruled against Republican-led redistricting efforts in Alabama.

The voting lines were drawn after the 2020 census, but black voters in the state challenged the newly constructed districts, saying the lines didn’t account for one district that had a majority black population. The voters claimed that the maps violated section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on race.

All three liberal justices were joined by conservatives John Roberts and Brett Kavanaugh in agreeing with the black voters.

This will result in the creation of a new district accommodating the black majority in that area. This could have a significant impact on the 2024 elections.
