A new study reveals that transgender surgeries do not improve mental health, and instead leave people feeling lonelier and more depressed. And while that may not be a shocking discovery, what’s surprising is who published the study.

The study originated from the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in Germany which carries out transgender procedures. Researchers from this gender-affirming department found that life satisfaction among its patients did not increase after undergoing surgery.

These individuals actually reported feeling lonelier. Data also showed the patients who identified as transgender were almost 13 times more likely to find life “extremely dissatisfying.”

The study correlates with other data. One study showed that the suicide completion rate for those who had undergone this surgery was 19 times higher than the general population.
