The Oklahoma Statewide Virtual School Board is the first to approve a religious charter school in the United States. The board approved the application of an online Catholic school on Monday in a 3-2 vote.
Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt commended the board’s approval for the school as “courageous” and said that “this is a win for religious liberty” and educational freedom in the state.
But backlash is expected from a nonprofit that advocates for separation of church and state. Meanwhile, the school plans to hold classes starting in September.
