Fewer women had babies last year than the year before, showing that not everything is going back to normal after the pandemic.
CDC stats show there were about 3.7 million births in 2022, with just a few thousand less than the year before. They say this is a “nonsignificant decline.”
But it’s still notable after a sharp 4% drop in birth numbers from 2019 to 2020. Those numbers only bounced back by about 1-point in 2021.
Almost every state saw this drop. But There were two exceptions. Texas and Florida both saw over a 3% increase in babies.
Some experts say that birth rates are dropping because women are delaying motherhood. The data does show that there are now more moms over the age of 35 than ever before.
Meanwhile, teen birth rates are at a record low. There were only 13.5 births per 1000 moms between the ages of 15-19. That means this age group has seen a 67% decline since 2007.
