The special counsel in charge of investigating former President Donald Trump’s possession of classified documents reportedly has a recording in which Trump admits to having kept sensitive items after leaving the presidency.

CNN first reported on the existence of the recording, which was made at Trump’s in Bedminster, New Jersey, golf course in August of 2021.

The exact verbiage on the recording is unknown, but CNN cited multiple sources who confirmed a recording exists and that contains Trump telling someone that he had in his possession sensitive information relating to Iran, information Trump indicated he was not at liberty to share due to its confidential status.

As with almost everything involving the former president, much of what has emerged about this recording has been met with a polarized response.

On one side, media outlets and Trump opponents have treated the story as indicative that Trump knew he had taken and still possessed sensitive documents and that his defense — one centered on Trump’s stance that he could automatically declassify any document — was invalid since Trump was speaking as though the information he possessed was still classified.

The pro-Trump side, and indeed Trump himself, has portrayed the revelation as a hatchet job backed by the Justice Department, FBI, and Special Prosecutor Jack Smith.

The Washington Post reports that a Trump spokesperson, Reuters identified him as Stephen Cheung, said the story was the result of leaks meant to “inflame tensions and continue the media’s harassment of President Trump and his supporters. It’s just more proof that when it comes to President Trump, there are absolutely no depths to which they will not sink as they pursue their witch hunts.”

Thursday on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Just like the Democrat inspired Fake Dossier, RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA, UKRAINE, UKRAINE, UKRAINE, Impeachment Hoax #1, Impeachment Hoax #2, the ‘No Collusion’ Mueller Report, and so much else, the illegally leaked, by the DOJ, FBI, and Special ‘Prosecutor,’ Document story is a continuation of the greatest Witch Hunt of all time and, like all of the others, Fake News! I did nothing wrong, they did, and have been doing so for a long time. GREAT POLL NUMBERS – ELECTION INTERFERENCE!!!”

As of this writing, neither the Justice Department nor Smith’s office has issued a comment about the recording or Trump’s response to the CNN story.
