NASA held its first public meeting since launching a study into UFO sightings last year. NASA officials described the hearing as the first step in explaining what they call unidentified aerial phenomena, or UAPs.

The hearing included a group of sixteen panelists. The panel found that while many sightings had “readily explainable sources”, there were some events that the agency itself could not understand.

The panel also called for additional data and research into UAP sightings.

Though the panel found that there was no evidence that UAPs were extraterrestrial, they emphasized that there still is no known explanation for many of the sightings.

The NASA investigation is separate from a similar one being conducted by the Pentagon. The panel is expected to issue a final report by the end of July.
