China is creating a new communication hotline with a key American partner, despite tense relations with the U.S.
China and Singapore signed an agreement earlier today. It establishes a secure telephone link between defense leaders. Singapore says the high-level open communication line is “important for strengthening mutual understanding and trust.”
It’s notable that China is strengthening ties with its neighbors during a time of strained relations with Washington.
Just this Sunday, China’s new defense minister declined a meeting with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin at a conference. The ministry says this was because the U.S. “disregards China’s concerns and creates artificial obstacles.”
But Singapore is a close military and economic partner of the U.S.
Meanwhile back in March, China created a similar hotline with Japan, who is also a US partner.
