This past weekend in Italy, the Grand Canal in Venice mysteriously took on a bright green hue.

People noticed the strange color on Sunday as sections near the famous Rialto Bridge turned neon green. At first, the local police suspected that it was an environmentalist stunt. The water has been tinted before to make a statement.

But as it turns out, the green color was caused by fluorescein. It’s organic non-toxic chemical used to inspect wastewater networks. But it’s still unknown how it got into the water.

The regional president confirmed in a Tweet yesterday that there’s “no danger of pollution” in the Canal
